RuGame web site and forum web site design example - 2007A vast majority of dynamically programmed web site applications will link up to an external online database which holds all of the content, user data, shopping basket details or product information to be displayed on each of the website's internal pages.

By linking your web site to a database it allows us to include dynamic features, much like a web application. A web application allows more interactivity and when linked to a database allows the visitor to search for information and be presented with unique pages of information drawn from the database's data.

Types of web application include, web blog's, forums, ecommerce web sites and content management systems.

We call these dynamic database driven web sites or web applications. These types of website may be constantly updated with new products, news posts, used to collect details, statistics or information from users.

At DADI - dadi-online we can create a database to allow the front-end of your website to perform almost any specific task. We can collect subscriber information, create an application to show statistics, graphs, pie charts or graphics, allow users to subscribe to your website for more information, compare services, prices or products and allow a transaction via a payment gateway, such as PayPal or Google Checkout.

One of the biggest advantages of a web application is that they can be driven from an online content management system, where the content on the site can be added by your authorised employees who won't need to understand HTML or advanced web site scripting technologies. A web application or dynamic web site can contain an unlimited number of pages that can be generated on-the-fly when a user requests the information.

The list of web programming languages available to us to create a web application is almost endless but they all tend to work in the same way.

  • When a static web site receives a request for a page, the web server sends the page along with the images and other external files to the users browser window.
  • When a web application or dynamic web site receives a request for a page it will only display the information defined by the user requesting it.

This means your site quickly becomes more of a user friendly, streamlined, interactive and enjoyable experience to the end user.

"What types of website require an online database"

A database is typically required for the following types of website:

  • Automotive website's displaying a large range of vehicles
  • Online estate agents, displaying a list of properties, images or videos
  • Price comparison website's, comparing prices on products or services
  • Online shopping website's or ecommerce stores
  • Online community website's, forums, blog's and bulletin boards
  • Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace
  • Large information portals where information regularly changes
  • Image or photograph hosting web sites
  • Video hosting website's such as YouTube or Vimeo
  • Search engine sites and web directories
  • Online data collection or statistic analysis website's

This list is almost endless.

Many of the major internet website's use a database to store information about how you interact with their web site, store your viewing preferences, favourite products, forum posts, online blog posts, images, videos and details.  They can then trawl through the data they have collected and run numerous reports to view statistics and see user trends before or as they happen.

"Can you create any type of database"

In most cases DADI - dadi-online can create almost any type of database although there is some common factors which play an important role in helping us to decide which type of database will suit the task required.

Operating system:

A MicroSoft Windows web server will allow you the ability to run:

  • ASP (active server pages)
  • PHP (not all will run PHP pages, check with your hosting provider)
  • XML
  • CGI scripts
  • Microsoft Access databases
  • ODBC
  • .NET applications

A Linux web server will allow you the ability to run:

  • PHP pages
  • CGI scripts
  • PERL
  • Python
  • XML
  • MySQL databases
  • PostgreSQL

The tier system:

Most dynamic web sites requiring the use of a database are split into what we call a tier system.

  1. Tier 1:
The front end of your website is generally what the public see, we call this area tier 1. This area contains your corporate branding, documents, images, product pages, list of services and contact information.  This is the area which allows your customers to interact with your website, search for products or information, make purchases and pay for your goods online.
  2. Tier 2:
The second tier is typically your administration area.  This area allows you or your authorised employees to sign-in, add, edit or delete products, run reports or check what sales have taken place. In a content management system, this is the area that allows you to change the pages contained within your website and upload images, photographs or important documents.
  3. Tier 3:
The third tier is the online database itself. Your entire website has a permanent connection to the database, enabling the features such as your online shopping cart, payment or data collection facilities to work.

The data that is contained within your online database is added or changed via tier's 1 and 2.

Tier 1 (your website's front-end) typically collects data to be stored within your database

Tier 2 (your administration area) allows you to edit the data or perform a specific task with the stored information.

Tier 3 (your database) stores all of the information from your customers interactions, stores the changes you make to your pages or products and serves data to tier 1 and tier 2.

DADI - dadi-online web site design example - 2010Is your web site accessible by over 8 million disabled users in the UK?
If not, contact us to find out how we can help you and your business meet web site accessibility requirements as set out by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA)

Web accessibility refers to the practice of making website's usable by people of all abilities and disabilities. When a website is correctly designed, developed and edited, all users can have equal access to information and functionality.

Section III of the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) makes it unlawful for a UK service provider or business to discriminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide any service which it provides to members of the public. As a UK based business you are required to comply if you provide goods, facilities and services to the general public.

Section III of the DDA, which refers to accessible website's, came into force on 1st October 1999 and the Code of Practice for this section of the DDA was published on 27th May 2002. This means that the majority of website's have been in breach of the law for over five years.
